August 14-17: King John: A Solo Performance
Matthew Windham performs an action-packed one-person telling of Shakespeare’s bold, strikingly modern
King John. This sharp critique of unconstrained power and its abuses follows Prince John, of Robin Hood fame, as he rises to great unchecked power, with bloody consequences.
This rarely staged play is an unflinching portrait of the bloody price that a society must pay for the political ambitions of a reckless few. Yet even within his jagged narrative, Shakespeare finds poignancy, humanity, heartbreak and humor shimmering through a darkly cynical vision that feels startlingly, urgently familiar.
Estimated running time: 65-70 minutes.
This swift and lean solo adaptation is a Giddy Round international collaboration between Macedonian director Damjan Dimovski and U.S.-based actor/adapter Matthew Windham. The Giddy Round produces innovative re-envisioned Shakespeare plays for touring and cultural exchange.
